Our Story and Mission

How a shared frustration with financial confusion became a centre dedicated to practical money education for Cardiff families and professionals.

From Observation to Action

Our founding team spent years in financial services, witnessing firsthand how preventable money mistakes affected families across all income levels. The pattern was consistent: intelligent, capable people making poor financial decisions simply because no one had ever taught them the fundamentals.

Schools rarely cover personal finance in meaningful depth. Universities focus on theoretical economics rather than practical money management. And by the time most adults seek financial advice, they have already developed habits that work against their long-term interests.

Building Something Different

We established velvet-otter in 2018 with a clear purpose: create a learning environment where financial concepts become accessible to everyone. Not through oversimplification that leaves gaps, but through careful instruction that builds genuine understanding.

Our approach differs from typical financial seminars in several important ways. We avoid sales pitches for financial products. We focus on principles rather than specific investment recommendations. And we structure our programmes to develop lasting skills rather than temporary enthusiasm.

"The goal was never to create financially sophisticated individuals overnight. We wanted to help people feel confident making everyday money decisions and give them tools to continue learning independently."

Our Educational Philosophy

Financial literacy programmes often fail because they treat money as a purely technical subject. Numbers and formulas without context. We take a different view: financial decisions are fundamentally about values, priorities, and understanding your own psychology.

Our curriculum addresses the emotional and behavioural aspects of money alongside the practical techniques. We explore why saving feels difficult, how marketing influences spending, and what research reveals about decision-making under uncertainty. This rounded approach produces more resilient financial habits than technical instruction alone.

Commitment to Accessibility

Quality financial education should not be limited to those who can already afford premium advice. We maintain several initiatives to broaden access to our programmes:

  • Reduced rates for participants receiving Universal Credit or other benefits
  • Family packages that make multi-generational learning more affordable
  • Free quarterly community workshops on essential topics
  • Partnerships with local schools for supplementary financial literacy sessions

Educational programmes provide general financial knowledge and should not be considered personalised financial advice. Individual circumstances differ, and implementing learned strategies may produce varying results. For decisions involving significant financial commitments, consultation with a qualified financial adviser is recommended.
